 Our Picks:

#1 Firestone Destination LE

Out of 20 tires Consumers Reports rank this tire was #2 in winter performance behind the Michelin LTX A/S.  Our experience has been the Destination LE outperforms the Michelin in winter, but we give the edge in summer to the LTX A/S.  The exceptional build quality, good winter performance, smooth and quiet ride, combined with great pricing made the Destination LE our #1 tire value for SUVs and pickups.  Honestly we never thought we would feel that way about a Firestone tire, it surprised us too!

#2 Firestone Destination AT

We never thought this tire would be our “go to” tire for pickups and large SUV’s.  The combination of great build quality, exceptional quietness, long lasting and much above average  winter performance combined with great value has made this a #1 seller for us.  Bridgestone/Firestone commitment to quality is very evident in this tire. For car based and small SUV’s we prefer the Firestone Destination LE because they are smoother and quieter.

#3 Nokian Vatiiva

The Nokian Vatiiva sits atop of the mid price tire market. The Hakka Siping system improves winter grip while providing a high level of stability during high-speed driving. This rugged all-terrain tire is a great choice for SUV’S an ½ ton pickups but its soft rubber compound make it a poor choice for ¾ or 1 ton pickups and vans. For those vehicles we recommend the Firestone Transforce AT. The Vatiiva will slightly outperform to the Firestone Destination AT in winter conditions but the Destination is a better all around tire and will last about 30% longer.

#4 Firestone Transforce AT

If you’re driving a ¾ or 1 ton truck or van look no further.  This is the ONLY tire we recommend for those vehicles.  We have seen oilfield trucks (you know the one with pipes for bumpers and a big vise mounted on the rear of the truck); get 80,000 miles out of a set of Transforce.  Nobody is harder on tires than those guys.  This tire is exceptionally long wearing, great in the winter and quiet. This is a serious commercial duty tire at a very reasonable price.

#5 Toyo Open Country HT

The solid shoulder design of this tire makes it practically impervious to the irregular wear that plagues most light truck and SUV tires.  The solid shoulder design aids in handling, tracking, long life and quiet ride.  This tire is a great choice for large and heavy SUVs.  The winter performance is good on snow but only fair on ice.  We chose this for our own vehicle’s summer tires. This tire is available in H&V speed ratings for SUVs, and greatly enhances the stability and handling.

#6 Michelin LTX M/S2

Michelin builds some of the best tires in the world and the LTX M/S2 are no exception. If you are looking for a smooth, quiet and long lasting premium tire for your SUV you won’t be disappointed. The only downside is the winter performance is about average.

#7 Michelin LTX A/T2

The A/T2 like its sister the M/S2 is a premium tire. The slightly more aggressive tread of A/T2 make it more suitable for pickups, vans and vehicles that are more likely to see some off road use. Although we like this for pickups and vans, ¾ and 1 ton vehicles (especially the ones that tow large trailers) will be better served with a commercial duty tire like the Firestone TransForce AT.

#8 Hankook Dynapro RF10

If you are not familiar with Hankook, they are the 8th largest tire manufacturer in the world.  This South Korean company is following the footsteps of Samsung and Hyundai providing great products for less money.  The Hankook Optimo H727 & DynaPro RF10 are some of the best built tires we have seen.  The RF10 is our top choice in a midgrade light truck tire but is slightly too aggressive tread for car based SUVs.  When push comes to shove we would prefer a Firestone Destination AT for about 10% more.  For SUV’s our choice hands down would be the Firestone Destination LE or Nokian WRG2.

#9 Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo 2

This tire sits at the top of the Bridgestone / Firestone line of light truck tires. The advanced construction of this tire makes it second to none. Dual Layer Tread (available in P-Metric sizes) helps minimize the effect of wear on wet and winter tire performance by exposing a new layer of high grip rubber as the tire wears. If this tire has an equal it would be the Michelin LTX AT2, the Michelin will last longer but the Revo has much better winter traction.

#10 BF Goodrich All Terrain TA KO

It is hard to believe a tire that’s been around so long can still perform nearly as well as the new designs.  This tire excels in winter and is pretty quiet for how aggressive its tread pattern is.  BFG is part of the Michelin family and the price reflects this relationship, but so does the build quality.  The soft tread compounds that make this tire perform well in the winter, and off road, lead to shorter tire life.   Because this tire is a “cult classic” most people know that they want this tire before they talk to us.

#11 Yokohama Geolander AT-S

Yokohama has made high quality tires for years and the AT-S is no exception.  While we find a lot to like in this tire, high build quality, good wet and dry road braking and handling, we are troubled by their tendency to wear unevenly and get noisy on some vehicles after only 30-50% tread wear.  For most vehicles we will recommend other tires in the same price range.

 Our Pans:

Cooper Discover ATR

This popular tire is riding on their good reputation of years past.  This tire is below average in performance and durability but above average in price against its peers.  It is not a bad tire, but you can just do better for your $$.  For $5-10 dollars more per tire you can move up to a Firestone Destination AT which will outperform in all conditions and lasts 30-50% longer.

Goodyear Fortera Triple Tred

Goodyear’s Assurance TripleTred (car version) and Goodyear Fortera TripleTred (Truck and SUV version) are decent all season tires that perform well in most weather conditions.  We have one major complaint about this tire, they often get very noisy when the tires are only half worn out. While not the best tire for any single road condition, the Goodyear TripleTred does offer a good compromise for most situations—except price.  You can expect fair performance in most driving conditions, but at the usual premium price for the Goodyear name.

Pathfinder Sport SUV

This “House Brand” or “Private Label” from Discount Tire represents one of the poorest values out there. With so many other tires to choose from, there is no reason to look at this tire.  Here are two customer comments from Discount Tire’s own website:   “Probably the worst tire on the market.  If you are lucky you can get 15K out of them. Save your money and buy something else.  I have had Pathfinders on 4 different vehicles and it has been the same result each time. Tread life is very poor.”  Or, “these tires could not be any WORSE! I have no idea why they are even on the market. Shot after only 29K, slippery on wet roads, no traction when starting from stop with any moisture at all, they even hydroplaned in the rain on the freeway and almost sent me and my kids off the road at 60 MPH. AVOID these deathtraps!” Also see Why We Hate Private Label Tires

Goodyear Wrangler

Goodyear Wrangler has 17 different sub models! Really!  Wrangler AT, Wrangler AT/S, Wrangler AT/S (P), Wrangler Dura Trac, Wrangler GS-A, Wrangler HP, Wrangler HP (P), Wrangler HT, Wrangler, Wrangler MT/R, Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar, Wrangler RTS, Wrangler RTS (P), Wrangler Radial (P), Wrangler SR-A, Wrangler ST (P), Wrangler Silent Armor and last but not least (drum roll please………………….) Wrangler TD. What they all have in common is they are riding on the great Wrangler name of the last 30 years. In our opinion none of the Wrangler tires hold the promise of the revered name. There is almost always a better choice.
